4.5mm needles using 2 strands of DK yarn

NB: I find slipping first st purlwise gives neater edge.

Thread yarn through loop to finish.

Last rat: instead of finishing last 3st use them to make i-cord tail, about same length as rat.

Eyes, whiskers and nose can be added (eye stitches could be used to fix rats together.

I had alot of fun with your cat scarf so now I am goin to make a reat scarf for my hubby he is turning 50 on Feb 4thand he hates mice and rats and recently he refused to go int my kitchen until I got rid of the 2 inch moouse that poked his head out from under our stove but he didn’t want me to kill he wanted me to catch an release it bak out int the wild. i’m sure this will be a big hit at his party

  8. In Row 35, does CO mean Cast On? I’ve never seen that marking in the middle of a pattern, I’m not sure what to do!

    • CO – cast off; confusing as CO is also “cast on”- sorry, I knit in UK English! I should put BO or bind off in brackets, It’s to shape the ears, you cast off 5 st then carry on knitting pulling the yarn fairly tight to make the curve in the ears.

      I hope this makes it clearer.

  13. No, just make sure you pull the yarn quite tightly, you k2tog at each end of the next row, as I said above —

  14. If I’m understanding my own work (!) at the end of row 35 you have one stitch, gap (cast off sts), 13 stitches, gap, one stitch. 15sts

    On row 36 you k2 tog, knit to last 2 sts, k2 tog. 13sts. This closes the gap and forms the ears and the new sts on row 39 add shape to them.

    Does this make it clearer?

  15. Thanks, I just finally figured out where I had gone wrong, in that I included the first knit stitch in the cast off instead of leaving it. Exactly what you just said. My brain was on vacation, hope it was nice. Thanks for your patience.

  16. Your entry on december 27th made all the difference for me. I got lost too on row 35, but once you separated the stitches it made all the sense in the world. thank you so much for this cool pattern, i am making it for a friends granddaughter who is the “Rat Queen”. Love it!

  17. I am almost finished with mine… I stuck to all kinds of “ratty” colors, greys, browns, grubby tans. I’m excited to have this done… it really fits my weird sense of humor. And I’m going to call it my “plague” scarf! My husband suggested making the eyes red… Most of my eyes will be Xs 🙂

  18. However, I modified the pattern at rows 34-35. I didn’t understand that the last stitch at the end of row 35 was meant to curve the ears, and I didn’t know what to do with the stitch at the end of the row, so I (sorry, I’m a Yank) Cast Off 5 sts at the beginning of row 34 and row 35. It makes the ears slightly lopsided, but…the rat is squashed, so it’s supposed to be wonky, right? Clapped right between two heavy tomes… I’ve contemplated making a little pink tongue to stick out of one of the rats. I’ve also made it much longer, so that I can wrap it around my neck. I’m an English teacher, so I’m looking forward to wearing this to work in the fall!

I made this for myself last winter, using ratty shades of gray, black, cream and brown… I also crocheted some little pink tongues to hang out of a couple of mouths, and did some with X eyes instead of black dots. I call it “The Plague Scarf”…and I’ve had lots of requests to make it for people who want to pay me. I didn’t feel comfortable doing that without your permission. I absolutely loved this scarf, and it was so fun to make…I get so many comments on it! I don’t know if I can post my picture here or not… I will try.
